Walks and Cycling
In short: three waymarked routes are a short drive from Bainside: the Spa Trail between Woodhall Spa and Horncastle on the old railway line, the Viking Way long-distance path through Woodhall Spa, and the Water Rail Way cycle route along the River Witham at Kirkstead Bridge. Woodhall Spa Bike Hire will deliver bikes to the site, and there is cycle storage on site.
The Spa Trail
The Spa Trail is a multi-user route for walkers and cyclists between Horncastle and Woodhall Spa, following the old railway line. From Coronation Walk in Horncastle the first 1.8 miles are surfaced in tarmac and compacted stone, and the trail continues a further three miles to Woodhall Spa. Details: Visit Lincolnshire, Spa Trail walk.
The Viking Way
The Viking Way is a 147-mile trail from the Humber to Oakham. Its section from Horncastle to Bardney, 15 miles, runs along the Spa Trail and through Woodhall Spa and Stixwould, and a 2.5-mile Viking Way short walk loops around Woodhall Spa from the Cottage Museum. Details: Visit Lincolnshire, Woodhall Spa short walk.
The Water Rail Way
The Water Rail Way, part of National Cycle Route 1, follows the River Witham between Lincoln and Boston, mostly traffic-free and with a sculpture trail along the way. It passes Kirkstead Bridge, where roads lead into Woodhall Spa. Sections are sometimes closed for works, so check the route page before you set off.
Close to the Site
Kirkby Gravel Pits, a Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust reserve a mile south of Kirkby on Bain, has a public bridleway east to the River Bain; dogs are welcome on leads on the bridleway. Ostler’s Plantation, a Forestry England wood on Kirkby Lane, Woodhall Spa, is open dawn to dusk and welcomes dogs. Kirkby Moor and Moor Farm are wonderful for wildlife but do not allow dogs: see wildlife and nature reserves near Bainside.
